Major Wallace Carruthers noted the importance of heliography and semaphore communications in the Boer War in the early 1900s, and championed the establishment in 1903 of the Canadian Signal Corps—now Royal Canadian Corps of Signals and the Communications and Electronics Branch. The branch flag inherits the colours of the major’s first billet, the French grey and dark blue of the 21st Lancers.
